Even before conception, the population of Potentia is meticulously genetically engineered, making disease and premature death barbaric memories of the past. This has allowed most of society to enter into a contrived utopia founded on the prioritization of certain traits…and disdain for anything different.

Elliot has lived his whole life as an outcast struggling to fit in. He is an outlier—the Unplanned that should have never been born. With an older, Planned brother that excels even in a society filled with near-perfect citizens, he has survived living in the shadows of others' brilliance.

When an infection destroys the very foundation of the specious society, Elliot is forced to come to terms with reality and decide what is more important science or fate?

Specious Excerpt

“You need to leave me,” I say through clenched teeth. “I’m slowing you down.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I see her shake her head.

“No, we’re in this together, remember?”

I look back behind us. It’s hopeless. “We’re not going to make it together.” I try to pull away, but she holds on and keeps pushing me.

She shakes her head again in stubbornness. “That’s exactly how we’re going to make it.”

I don’t believe her. We should have taken our stand before we got tired.

The distance between them and us shrinks rapidly due to our exhaustion. They’re about fifty yards behind us. I push through and try to gain my speed to keep up our unsustainable pace. Thirty yards. Their moaning is getting louder. Twenty yards. It feels like my side is on fire. Fifteen yards. Jess and I make eye contact. The same dread I feel is echoed in her face. The sounds of their dead weight shuffling is directly behind us. This is it.

They say when you’re about to die, your life flashes before your eyes. I don’t completely agree with that. It’s more like an explosion of memories that you have no control over.

Set in the distant future, this novel tells the story of fighting to survive despite betrayal and death as the dystopian society is revealed for what it really is.

Specious eBook Robin Berkstresser

Specious is a wild ride that once you sit in the driver seat, doesn't let you go. It follows the story of the lead character Elliot who has a chip on his shoulder as being unplanned in a genetic superior society. And while the story could have turned into Elliot proving society wrong, it instead takes a darker turn. Filled with a memorable cast of characters and a clear cutthroat villain, Specious demanded my attention long after the hours that I should have been sleeping. It delivers a different take on well established genre norms and for a debut Robin Berksresser does a tremendous job with her storytelling seeming like a well train veteran, Specious left me hungering for more and I cannot wait for the sequels. I strongly urge you to purchase this book and enjoy what will undoubtedly turn into the next great YA series.

Specious eBook Robin Berkstresser Reviews

I really enjoyed both books in this series. Dystopian future, with zombies? - I'm in. the characters' strengths and flaws are apparent from the beginning and the suffering caused from them is relentless. the world-building is solid, with a lot of room to grow, and plotlines to explore. I see some habits of very strong authors being discovered and honed in this book, as well as Dispersion, and i look forward to her future offers and ideas. Bravo!
I loved this book! Berkstressor does tackle some very heavy themes in this short read family disfunction, genetic engineering, family planning, bullying, communism... it’s all in here along with love, acceptance, heroism and friendship.... sprinkle in Zombies and you’ve got it all. Somehow she makes it all work and creates characters we can get behind. I can’t wait for the next book!
I found this book extremely enjoyable and am exited to follow the story arc into its second and third installments. The characters are flawed, but in a way that makes them all the more believable and relatable (i.e. not just the standard one-dimensional archetypes you find in most stories). The world in which the story takes place is very well thought out and sets a vivid stage for exploring the dangers behind what on paper would seem like an idyllic society. I did find it a bit slow at first, but once the story picked up, I couldn't put it down. If you find yourself in a similar place, do yourself a favor and keep reading - the arguments raised and the choices the characters face make for what I felt was a very compelling read, and left me with several questions I look forward to exploring as the rest of the series is unveiled. Enjoy!
This book is engaging from the beginning and not one you'll want to put down. Author has created very likeable "good guys" and one extremely devious, easy to hate "bad guy" and illustrates perfectly what can happen to society when arrogant do-gooders play God and try to create the perfect human race. To take a quote from one of the loveable characters in the book, the ending leaves me “Hungry for some Hungry”. I can’t wait for the saga to continue!
A very good tale. As some have posted Dominic is easy to hate. In conversations with the author I expressed feelings about the characters. They are easy to care for as well as dislike.

Very well written and proof read. I am a grammar nazi and the book as published is spot on.

Ready to read the next one, Dispersion.
Hands down the BEST read of the year! As an avid book worm I am always on the hunt for the next great read of my life and let me tell you this is it! From the very first chapter this book entrances you into the world of Elliot. I felt connected to him from the beginning and Robin does a fantastic job of showing you who he is throughout the story. His character grows and becomes so strong throughout the plot & I felt like I was riding the waves with his every up hill battle. (I won't give too much away as I hate spoilers) but this book will leave you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails at what the next page will bring. I could not put it down & now I am left waiting for the 2nd installment of this series. These characters will stay with your forever and I found myself questioning our world after finishing this book. It is thought provoking & truthfully we can take so much of her words and apply them to our every day life. Elliot is funny, smart, witty & such a great underdog rising in Specious. You will be rooting for him from the get go and will fall in love with his character as I have. When I say buy this book, I mean go BUY it right now!!!! You have no idea what your missing!
As someone who reads and watches every zombie book or movie I can get my hands on, I have to say, this is hands-down in my top 5! Fantastically written, page turning, suspenseful read. This book will make you cringe in a way that most zombie flicks don't. Its one of those books that makes you really LOVE the protagonist and strongly HATE the antagonist - I mean I was shaking in anger reading some of the things that that character did. The character development is fantastic! It's definitely a page-turner and a fast read, I really couldn't put it down. I'm very impressed too, being that Robin is a first-time author. You can tell from her writing that she had a fun time writing it. I'm looking forward to the next installments! GREAT read - young adult/teen and up. A very pleasant surprise in a market that's inundated with zombie flicks/books. This would make such a good movie!
